The Science of Dissolving: A Transparent Guide to Filler Dissolving
The aesthetics industry has changed a lot in recent years - and one of the most positive shifts has been the growing conversation around filler dissolving. More clients are asking about it, more practitioners are recommending it, and the stigma around it is finally fading.
At Elegance, we think that's a really good thing. So here's our honest, no-filter guide to everything you need to know.
What Is Filler Dissolving?
Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid - a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Filler dissolving uses an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which breaks down hyaluronic acid and allows the filler to be safely absorbed and cleared by the body.
It is a straightforward, well-established procedure - but it should always be carried out by a qualified, experienced practitioner. Not all hyaluronidase is the same, and the skill of the person administering it matters enormously.
When Is Dissolving Recommended?
There are several reasons a client might need or choose to dissolve their filler. Sometimes it's a cosmetic preference - perhaps a previous treatment has left the filler looking uneven, overfilled or simply not right for the face anymore. Trends change, faces change, and what felt right a few years ago might not feel like you today.
In other cases, dissolving is clinically necessary. Filler migration, vascular complications or product that has built up over multiple treatments can all require dissolving as part of a proper corrective plan.
At Elegance, we also see clients who come to us from other clinics - and we always approach these cases with care, patience and complete transparency about what we can see and what we recommend.
The "Reset" Approach
One of the most common reasons clients come to us for dissolving is simply to start fresh. Rather than adding more product on top of previous work, a full dissolve gives us a clean canvas to work from - which almost always leads to a better, more natural result when we come to re-treat.
It takes a little patience, as we recommend waiting several weeks after dissolving before re-injecting. But the outcome is almost always worth it.
How We Do It Safely at Elegance
Safety is non-negotiable for us. Every dissolving appointment at Elegance starts with a thorough consultation to assess the filler, understand the history of treatments and discuss the client's goals. We use only medical-grade hyaluronidase, administered by our experienced nurse practitioners.
We also patch test prior to treatment, as allergic reactions - while rare - can occur. This is a step that should never be skipped, and at Elegance it never is.
After treatment, we schedule a follow-up to assess the result and discuss next steps. Whether that's a fresh treatment plan or simply monitoring the skin, we make sure every client leaves with a clear picture of what comes next.
