What does CO2 laser resurfacing actually do?
CO2 laser is an advanced resurfacing treatment that uses controlled laser energy to create microscopic areas of injury within the skin.
This initiates a repair response and encourages skin renewal and collagen remodelling.
Because of the depth at which a CO2 laser can work, it may be considered for concerns such as acne scarring, more significant uneven skin texture, fine lines and signs of photoageing.
It is more intensive than a relaxing facial — and it should be approached accordingly.
What happens after CO2 laser treatment?
One of the most important parts of a CO2 consultation is having realistic expectations around recovery.
The skin will not look at its best immediately after treatment.
Redness, swelling, sensitivity and changes in the appearance and texture of the skin can occur during the initial healing period. Exactly how your skin looks and how long recovery lasts will depend on the treatment settings used, the area treated and your individual response.

When will you see the results?
CO2 laser results are progressive.

Clients may begin to notice changes in skin texture, smoothness and overall quality over time rather than seeing the complete result immediately.
The extent of improvement also depends heavily on what is being treated.
Someone with mild textural concerns will have a very different starting point from somebody undergoing resurfacing for more established acne scarring.
Is CO2 laser good for acne scars?
CO2 laser resurfacing can be considered for certain types of acne scarring because it allows us to work more intensively on skin texture and remodelling.
However, “acne scars” is a broad term.
Different scar types behave differently, and no single treatment is right for every case. Some clients may benefit from a treatment plan involving other modalities or a staged approach rather than expecting one laser session to completely remove scarring.
Our aim is always improvement rather than promising perfectly texture-free skin.
CO2 laser or a gentler treatment?
More intensive does not automatically mean more appropriate.
If your concerns are relatively mild, treatments such as SkinPen microneedling or professional skin peels may offer a more suitable starting point with a different level of downtime.

A good practitioner should be willing to tell you when you don’t need the strongest treatment available.
